Review Media Storm Field Guide for shooting photos + b-roll and 180 degree rule.
In lightroom:
edit visual sequences from a variety of shots of a variety of situations
- color correct photos
- crop images to 16×9
- export photos as custom name w/sequence
- change image size to 3000pix x 3000pix
Bring to class:
- folder of edited photos
- audio transcript for Assignment one, with highlighted soundbites, approximate time frame in margin.
In class we will create an audio slideshow in FCPX
- set up library, event and project
- check button to ‘leave files in place’
- set project as 1080p 24fps
- add soundbites and photos to the timeline
- add lower thirds for title (on first image) and to introduce characters
- add ‘credits’ title at the end
- make adjustments to audio levels
- share movie as ‘master (apple pro res422)’
- use Compressor to compress to h.264 codec for online
- upload compressed movie to Vimeo or YouTube account
- add permissions and copy embed code
- paste code into a blog post, add title to post
- review some audio slideshows

Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography in 2016.
Jessica Rinaldi graduated from Boston University’s photo program in 1991. She won the Pulitzer Prize in the Feature category in 2016 for a series of photos that she shot for the Boston Globe of a young boy named Strider Wolf growing up poor in rural Maine. Strider faces some pretty tough times there.
A 50mm 1.8 prime lens is not required – but…
A 50mm 1.8 is always a good idea. It’s a prime lens, not a variable focal length, which makes it compact. It also is sharp, bright, and relatively inexpensive. A 50mm makes it easy to work in low light, and it catches less flare from backlight. But the lens is not required for class. The kit lens that comes with the camera can work.

Your first assignment on portraits, shot in the sun and shade (or shadow) – is due on the fourth class.
On the second class meeting, I’ll check out everyone’s gear and make sure that your camera menu settings are good, and that you can adjust your shutter, aperture and iso, use camera’s light meter and understand how to read your histogram. Everyone also needs to adjust the diopter on the viewfinder as well.Then we will head out for a brief field trip, 45 mins., to practice shooting portraits.
On week three, we will use those images to learn to edit in Lightroom – to download, edit, tag, caption and convert to jpg and sRGB, and to export. Takes about 90 minutes.
On the fourth week, your first assignment is due at the end of lab – you’ll have about 75 minutes to edit and deliver your assignment. You can start shooting your anytime and you have three weeks to finish.
This pacing works well to help you meet the goal of understanding the basis of Basic Photo in three weeks. Two weeks after that, you’ll know how to shoot shutter and aperture priority in manual mode. This makes you semi-pro.
